Professionalism
Key elements of a successful professional work environment across all settings include the establishment of norms, development of trust and rapport, and student-centered problem solving. Specific strategies to create and maintain personal work environments include monitoring communication, outlining expectations, and following up about next steps. Educational technology can be used to help students work collaboratively, to communicate and express ideas creatively, to embrace curiosity, and to encourage life-long learning. I taught during distance learning and had to learn (quickly) how to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for students. Announcements helped me to connect with students and build community. Providing access to Resources helped students to explore relevant supports. I have also found that including a Resources page on Canvas minimizes questions about where to find different tools - they are all in one place! As with any technology, I first had to show students where and how to access, as well as provide many opportunities for them to practice.

Leadership and Communication
Engaging stakeholders, using culturally appropriate communication, and preparing students to be active and positive citizens in technological environments are all components of running a successful classroom. I engage stakeholders (student, family, teachers, support staff, administrators, counselors) through consistent and clear communication. I reach out to families who do not respond regularly to my emails to make sure that they feel like they are a part of the team and to problem-solve around technology or language barriers. I actively seek input from stakeholders to support students. I use information shared by stakeholders to analyze what is going well and what is still needed. I ask families to share student strengths as well as concerns, I ask about their familiarity with the IEP process and school supports, and I provide an opportunity for them to share anything else they think I should know.
